How Non-Profit Aphesis Boosted Mail Open Rates to 60% Using UUNA TEK iAuto Plus

Everything in the world is getting more automated, more digital, and more impersonal. That was true even before AI. Now it feels like it is everywhere.

There are tools that can “personalize” thousands of emails in a few minutes. Your inbox is full of messages that look like somebody wrote them just for you, even though you know they probably didn’t.

Why We Bought It

We are a small nonprofit called Aphesis. But I should say up front: I think this machine is just as useful, maybe even more useful, for businesses.

If you do direct mail, B2B outreach, customer thank-yous, sales letters, real estate mailings, donor communication, high ticket business sales, onboarding, Christmas letters, or anything else where getting someone to actually open the envelope matters, this thing is pretty amazing.

One of the biggest things we wanted to do was market to thousands of businesses through direct mail. We also send a lot of communication to churches, donors, volunteers, and other people connected to our nonprofit.

THE PROBLEM WAS VOLUME.

Handwriting 50 envelopes? Fine. 200? Annoying. 1,000? Probably impossible.

Handwriting 4,000? Forget it.

We could theoretically recruit volunteers, spread piles of envelopes across a room, and have everybody start writing. But it would take forever. Even with 10 volunteers, you're talking about hundreds of envelopes per person. And then there's organizing everything, keeping addresses in order, making sure handwriting is legible, and trying to keep the quality somewhat consistent.

It just isn't realistic at the volume we wanted to send.

Before the iAuto, we'd used printed envelopes, labels, and handwriting-style fonts through a normal printer. Some of them look pretty decent. But they still look printed.

The iAuto is different because an actual pen is touching the paper. That makes a bigger difference than I expected.

What We Have Actually Used It For

We've had the machine for about 7 months and have now run more than 10,000 pieces through it (which is kind of wild).

  • Addressing envelopes
  • Personalized cards

  • Donor communication
  • Volunteer updates
  • Fundraising
  • Thank-you notes

And we keep finding more things to do with it.

A large portion of our volume has been #10 envelopes. We have addressed around 7,000 of those alone.

We bought the iAuto Plus because it has the bigger capacity. Depending on what we are writing, we usually need to refill it every 25 to 60 minutes.

So no, you don't load 5,000 envelopes, go home, and come back the next morning. But you're also not sitting there handwriting them yourself. You load it, let it run, work on something else, and come back when it needs more. For us, that is a huge win.

One of My Favorite Uses: Personalized Cards

This might be my favorite use case so far. Actually, it probably is.

We buy blank greeting cards that can go through a printer, print our own design, and then use the iAuto to write the personalized message and address the envelope.

These are the exact cards we use:

  • Desktop Supplies – 5 x 7 blank white matte greeting cards

And these are the A7 envelopes we have been using:

  • Amazon – Winlyn A7 invitation envelopes

Our process is basically:

  1. Buy the blank greeting cards.
  2. Buy A7 envelopes.
  3. Print the design on the cards.
  4. Set up the iAuto with mail merge.
  5. Let it write the personalized cards and envelopes.
  6. Send them.

The cost is kind of crazy when you compare it with paying someone to handwrite everything or even businesses that will do it for you. Roughly, you are looking at around $150 for 1,000 cards, $58 for envelopes, maybe $80 in printing at around eight cents per click, and then a few Pilot G2 pens. So for somewhere around $300, before postage, you can create 1,000 personalized cards.

Try handwriting 1,000 cards yourself. Seriously. Even if you could do one every few minutes, it would take an unbelievable amount of time.

Does It Actually Look Handwritten? (And The Real Data)

YES. You literally cannot tell. It is that good.

One thing I definitely recommend: get your own handwriting turned into a font. And honestly, sometimes the messier the better. If the handwriting is too perfect, it almost starts to look like a font. Real handwriting has little inconsistencies. That is what makes it believable.

When it looks like your actual handwriting and a real pen is putting ink onto the envelope or card, it is incredibly convincing.

We decided to track the numbers on a 2,000-piece direct mail campaign comparing printed envelopes to the iAuto pen-plotted envelopes. Here is what we saw:

In a world where everybody is fighting for attention in an email inbox, a handwritten envelope feels completely different—and the 4x jump in response rate completely paid for the machine on our second batch.

Reliability & Maintenance After 10,000 Pieces

When you run a machine this hard, you expect issues. Over 10,000 pieces, here is how the hardware actually held up:

  • Paper Jams & Feed Reliability: Misfeeds are surprisingly rare (around 1% to 1.5%), and almost always happen when using overly textured cardstock or warped envelopes. Keeping the feed rollers clean keeps it running smoothly.
  • Wear & Maintenance: After 7 months, we haven't needed to replace a single major mechanical component. Aside from wiping down the rails and swapping pens, maintenance has been virtually zero.

The Learning Curve

I really like this machine, but it is not perfectly plug-and-play.

The machine itself is built extremely well. It feels substantial, it works well, and the finished writing looks incredible. The setup can be frustrating at times.

Mail merge takes some learning. Different envelopes and cards behave a little differently. You have to figure out spacing, margins, fonts, and how your particular materials feed through the machine.

The software does what it needs to do, but I would love for the overall experience to be more intuitive. I'm fairly tech savvy and still had a learning curve.

The most helpful resources for me were YouTube videos from other users, the owners Facebook group, and UUNA TEK support. Their support has been fast and helpful when we have needed them.

My biggest advice: start small.

DO NOT make your first project 5,000 pieces. Just don't. Run 25. Then 100. Figure out your pen, font, envelopes, card stock, margins, and mail merge. Once you get your setup figured out, it works really well.

Would I Buy It Again?

Absolutely.

It can be frustrating at times, but it is SUCH a good machine. It works well. It is built well. And the writing quality is honestly amazing.

For us, the biggest value is not simply that it saves time. It makes projects possible that otherwise would be almost impossible. We are not going to ask volunteers to handwrite 4,000 envelopes. We are probably not going to sit around and handwrite 1,000 personalized cards.

With this machine, we can actually do those things—and with a 60%+ open rate, the results speak for themselves.

If your business depends on direct mail, prospecting, customer follow-up, referrals, real estate outreach, or anything else where a personal touch matters, I think there are a ton of applications.

The world is getting more digital and more automated. Strangely enough, that makes a real pen on a real piece of paper even more powerful.

After more than 10,000 pieces, I am very glad we bought it.
